"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less."
— Marie Curie

THE CON: BUMP AND GO - This is a common occurrence while in the subways, while on the Metro, Trains, busy squares, and events. The thief, in the right moment, bumps into you, as if it was an accident and pickpockets you without you having a clue. You could find yourself without your passport, credit cards and cash. This would ruin your day and possible your travel experience.
SOLUTION – Have the right gear in the right places to protect your identifications, currency and credit cards. Use your locks! Make sure your locks are visible on your bag. Try not be distracted and always be aware of your surroundings. This means try to stay off your phone while in areas of risk. If you need your phone walk over to an area where your back is top a wall and you can see all the people around you.
THE CON: THE LOST AND FRAZZLED – There is always someone waiting to "help" you at train station, the squares, places where you would think the con-man would not dare. Be sure they will dare. They act as if they are concerned for your wellbeing. Generally there are a few working together. While one is helping you. The other is looking for an opportunity to breeze by. This gives them a edge as you are distracted by the other. Use of readers is common all over the world today. it used to be less common in the USA, but no longer.
SOLUTION – Make sure you have all your information protected and hidden well, and always tethered to you. Locks are a deterrent and they will leave you alone most likely, not to say they wouldn't try. They might. It's always better to be protected.
THE CON: PREYING ON YOUR KINDNESS. This happens when you are walking down the street. it could be likely that is is a very busy street. They will tell you their sad story and lure you with a item of value that they are willing to sell for a few bucks to "get out of their situation". It could be a leather coat, usually something nice. Most likely a stolen item. They get you to open your wallet. This is a way to see what you have and where your wallet is kept. If you fall for this, you could be followed and then get hit with the BUMP AND GO scam.
SOLUTION - Stay away. Do not fall into their lure. Keep walking. Be aware of your surroundings. Always look around to know who the players are.
ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS.
Most often the thief is a coward. They are looking for the easy prey. Don't be the easy prey. This is the best way to stay out of trouble.
Don't be fearful, just be smart! Fear is a weakness that can be used against you by the thief. If you are prepared with the proper gear and knowledge you will have a wonderful positive and memorable adventure.
Travel with confidence, the thief will most likely stay away! READ MORE...

NEW ZEALND
I have been followed twice. Twice to many times. For the amount of time I travel, twice is not a surprise. My best advice is to try to look like a local. Try not to look lost. Be knowledgeable of your surroundings and pay attention to direction. Look for landmarks and never go down dark alleyways.
I was in Barbados with a female friend and we were in the capital city exploring the city. It was day time and I noticed that there was a man following us. My friend did not notice as she was distracted by the shops and new surroundings. I am always peeking behind me and looking at corners that are in my path.
With out alarming my friend, as I wanted to make sure my gut was accurate, I mentioned to her that we were going to cross the street to the other side. Sure enough the man crossed the street to stay behind us. The next block we cross back to the other side of the street. As the man was crossing the street I turned around while he was in the middle of the street and confronted him. He was not expecting this. He ran the other way. We were in control.
Most thieves are not interested in confrontation. They are, most often, cowards looking for the easy score. The grab and go. Quick and easy.
Don't be the target. If you are, confront them in a vulnerable moment and place, before they strike. Put them on the spot, in public, where people are watching. They will cower down most often, and most likely.
My second experience was in Lima Peru. Another friend and I were walking on a very busy street exploring the city and she noticed that this man was following behind us. We crossed the street and be both turned around to confront him. He also ran the other way.

Hide it somewhere in your bag. Keep your bag locked up when you are away from it. Even if you feel secure with your place of stay. Someone, you do not know, has a key to your room and can access when you are not there.
