"Formal education teaches how to stand, but to see the rainbow you must come out and walk many steps on your own."
— Amit Ray
My first trip traveling abroad, so many said traveling solo is dangerous. Well I am here to tell you, it is no different than going to any city. What I mean by this is "use common sense". Educate before you go. This page & site has many travel tips and links to help you journey to far away lands successfully.
Try to stay hands free. Less distractions help to ensure safe and clear passage.
Tether your important items: wallets, sunglass case, keys, passport wallet, items easily lost or easily left behind. Distractions happen and time crunches can cause us to not notice items on night stands, on the floors, on counters etc. Carry a few extra carabiners. Have the right gear to ensure a fun, memorable, stress free travel experience!
Bright colors not only brightens your day and inspires positive energy and a smile, it also helps with locating your things. This helps with keeping your gear with you and not leaving it behind. Dark or muted colors tend to blend. Leaving items behind can cause much stress in your travels not to mention the replacement cost.
Keep it simple and light!
Pack for one week. Carry one bag. You can wash your things along the way or buy new items if you feel you have the need which keeps your wardrobe interesting. It does not matter where you are going or for how long. Most of our world is civilized and there are clothing stores and shops all over.
"Simplify, simplify. That was the secret to a happy life."
— Dean Koontz
Toiletries • Shower • Skin Care items.
Try to stay away from liquids. Carry dry items, such as solids and powders. These items travel better and they carries less weight than water based products. With airport guidelines on liquids, this helps with peace of mind that you will not have to throw expensive items away at security. Keep in mind that some items you can purchase when you arrive at your destination.
Buy good socks and shoes. I have found that the best socks are made of merino wool. They do not promote odor or bacteria growth, if managed by airing them overnight. Do not store them in an airtight bag. If you are going to store them, keep them in a meshed pocket or mesh bag to allow ventilation. They also come in a variety of sizes: Tennis, Crew, boot... I also carry dryer sheets and a small travel size fabreeze & essential oils to help with odor. I travel with 3-4 pairs in various thicknesses and heights for all purposes and to allow alternating between washes.
Deodorant is not only important to manage body odor, but it also helps stretch the use of your clothes till you are able to wash them again. I travel with soft solid deodorant. Solids can break and fall apart. Soft solids have been my win as it does not fall apart and is not noticed as a liquid, so far that is.
Camera battery packs, efficient chargers and cases. Make sure you have several batteries and a dual charger. There is nothing worse than your battery losing its charge and you miss the photo opp even though our phones take great pictures these days, if you love your camera its good to be prepared.
Foot Care is so important when you travel. We are on our feet for so many hours and they may get wet or damp. Bring alcohol wipes, foot fungus cream and Tea Tree Oil to ensure healthy feet.
Wash your feet often. Also bring a lightweight flip flop to protect your feet from shower basins and bathroom floors.
Never go barefoot in hotels, hostels or public places.
PROTECT YOUR FEET!
Keep your electronics and valuables close to you! A travel vest or jacket with many pockets allows you to carry your electronics on your person during air travel. I have been traveling this way for the past few years. It has added to my peace of mind. This keeps your items safe and secure on you at all time. It also keeps the weight out of your carry-on bag to allow you to travel with a carry-on bag only.
Carry-on bag weight is 10kg or 22lbs and size matters ;-)
This is a great way to lighten the load and save a few bucks for other fun things along your travels.
AWARENESS. Always be aware of your surroundings. Stay focused on what is in front of you, be aware of what is behind you and listen to your gut to guide you. So many people are so focused on what is in their phones which makes you a perfect target for the predatory opportunists. Read as many reviews on the areas you will be traveling to learn as much as you can from others that have ventured there before you. Use common sense, don't walk down dark alleys. Keep an eye out for suspicious characters. Download a local map and make note of the landmarks so that you can maneuver around like a local.

MEN, Never place your wallet in your back pocket nor your front pocket! You are the prime target for the thief. You will never know if it is gone until you look for it. These guys and gals are slick. Get a tethered RFID blocker slim wallet that you can hook to your belt and tuck inside your pants between your skin and your garment. LADIES, zip up your day bag and tether a thin RFID blocker slim wallet under your outer layers.
Travel with a Sarong. This is not just for woman. Men pay attention. This item comes in handy in many situations. It can double as a towel, light blanket, scarf, body wrap, head wrap/veil, skirt, shorts, privacy curtain, pillow, makeshift strap, tie down, belt... etc.
They dry fast and are lightweight. They come in your favorite color
and are super functional.
I usually carry 2, but that is just me.
Always bring a swimsuit. Depending on the season and your size, it can be difficult to find a suit, in general, or that you like or fits right. There are so many places all over the world that have Thermae Bath Spa in Bath England or unique thermal spas and natural hot springs and oceans that just might be calling your name. In warm beach destinations you might want to snorkel or scuba the sea scapes.
Don't miss the opportunity to have a full travel experience and memories that you will never forget!
Travel with a lightweight flexible, tough hat.
I carry a black runners visor I picked up at REI. It is ultra-light, washable, dries fast and tough for the packing.
It has come in handy on most of my travels. It can be used for sun protection and is very functional in the rain. keeping the rain off your face while you are wearing a raincoat with a hood helps with visibility. Never fun to be caught in the rain on a hike and can not see your feet in front of you. I stick with black as it universal and shows little dirt.
LOCKS LOCKS LOCKS!!!! Never leave home without them. I have locks for my daypack and my luggage backpack.
Keep your things secure. I cannot stress this enough.
a thief is most always looking for the easy target.
Don't be the easy target, show your locks off!
Print (2) hard copies of your Passport and ID's
Hide one set somewhere in your bag. Keep your bag locked up when you are away from it. Even if you feel secure with your place of stay, someone you do not know has a key to your room and can access your things when you are not there.
Do not believe it won't happen to you. This is when it happens. The second copy is for someone you trust at home. I also make copies of my credit cards and my itinerary, along with a set of keys and give it my sister. I suggest you give it to someone you trust, your mom, sister, brother or someone very close to you. If anything happened while traveling solo I feel confident that my sister would be able to either help with resolutions of business issues or her ability to track my steps if I was to go missing. I like to hike beyond boundaries of safety. As a solo traveler, my children and family would be worried sick if I was to go missing. I could fall, get stuck or something else.
I can not predict the future.
All I can do is provide my information to someone I trust with my important information if I should need assistance.
Packing Cubes
Do not travel without them. Stay organized and pack with efficiency. Know where all your gear and clothings items are. Packing Cubes also help to ensure you don't lose items as you sift through your bag. If you check your bag and TSA opens you bag, this could prevent your items from falling out.
Don't settle for the flights that are offered to you based on your final destination. If you have a few extra days, I highly suggest being open to exploring new territory.
When a flight is over priced or not direct, seek alternate stops. Explore a destination that was not planned and you have never been or use this as an opportunity to have a little more time to discover new paths within your journey.
I find flights for, often, under $200 US. I find that I can travel to multiple places for the same cost it would be to fly direct. If you have a little time to explore, I encourage you do expand your journey.
